www.glacierdieselpower.com/images/PDFs/ARP%20Head%20Stud%20Installation.pdfGlacier Diesel Power did a great write-up on how to install ARP Head studs for the 2003-2014 5.9 and 6.7 Cummins motors. Everyones opinions will vary when it comes to upgrading to aftermarket head studs. But most suggest them after reaching 40-45psi of boost, you could get away with tightening the stock head bolts to 125ft/lbs but its still a gamble then, do it rite and get studs after a turbo upgrade or injectors! its quality insurance to avoid a expensive/timely problem! HEAD GASKET FAILURE! Most people will be fine with ARP 425's, but if your running higher boost and are not a tuning master then it's not a bad idea to go to the ARP 625's. Any questions you have on Cummins head stud related topics post it here

That's a good write up, that's what I followed the first couple times I did head studs. About the tenth set I put in, I had it memorized haha

You guys are talking Cummins so not to hijack you're thread, but does any one on hear know anything about upgrading head studs and not pulling the head? Doing them one at a time. Specifically regarding a Dmax, but might be an applicable question for all 3. If the head gasket is blown than that's obviously a whole different story. I've read about it being done but that's it. Specifically for anyone looking to upgrade and no current head gasket problems.

bundo I had an 04' duramax lb7 I put studs on. I did them one at a time without pulling the heads. It can be done. My gaskets were good, so no point in lifting the heads to replace them if I didn't need to. Snap-on make a tool for the 6.0 head studs that makes it a little easier to get to rear bolts. Snap-On part# SRD35 it's pretty handy. It says for 6.0, but it's a universally handy tool. You just have to remember that using a tool like this is going to alter to torque rating you're applying to the studs.

That's how I've always done them, no blown head gaskets just preventative work, so just one at a time in the Cummins and torque in the proper sequence

OK thanks guys. I might be looking to go that route. No current issues, but I'm adding some air and the preventative insurance and piece of mind would be nice.

Honestly man with a Dmax you, you start worrying about cracked Pistons about the time you need To worry about HGs as long as you have good tuning. So I wouldn't be terribly worried about them just because you add a little air

This is true and tuning is key. Just something that was in the back of my head.

I just installed some 425s in a deleted 6.7 that popped it's hg. The head required .006 shaved off to get it flat. I had to grind the aluminum valve cover spacer at every washer along the exhaust manifold side, and I had to clearance every rocker pedalstal. I wish that would have been in the instructions .

After a week of driving I had him bring his truck back over due to a loose rocker. I checked the torque on the arp nuts- took another 1/8-3/16 of a turn to reach the torque spec again. I'd recommend a retorque even with 425s. The truck did have a new headgasket so it may have compressed some more after a couple heat cycles.
I even torqued the head up initially and let it sit over night and every stud took some more turning to reach the spec.

Nothing crazy, mild compound set up. Doing a billet s475 over the stock turbo.
