Hey All! I just bought my first diesel a few weeks ago! 01 7.3 F350 crew cab long bed. To say the least I am stoked! But I would like to do some mods in the future (by future I mean I need to let my bank account and wife cool down after the big purchase). What do you all suggest? From the little that I have learned it would be good to get some gauges, but I don't even know what exactly I would be monitoring at this point. Not looking to go too crazy as I am not looking for significantly more power for any particular reason, but am looking to get it running as well as I can! I am planning on changing out all of the filters and fluids that I can over the summer as I have the funds for it, but honestly after the oil, air and fuel not sure what else to do or even quite how to do it (though I am sure I can figure it out as I do know the difference between the two ends of a wrench Any tips, comments, or help is much appreciated!

Welcome to the PSD family. I've got a 6.0 and only have limited familiarity with the 7.3 but it's a great motor. Mike should chime in along with some others I'm sure and they know more.

Gauges are definitely a good start. Isspro is the best in the business for sure.
Performance wise, if the truck is already stock of course, would be your big three. Exhaust, intake, and a chip/tuner
Stock exhaust is fine for the most part. It it 3.5" in diameter and won't really cause any ill effects until you get into big power levels. Unless of course you like the sweet sound of a 7.3l straight piped like most people do. Of course a nice stainless 4 or 5" pipe sure looks mean hanging off a truck.
The best air intake for these trucks is a Napa part 6637. It is well known as the 6637 mod. You can read more about it with a quick Google search. I suggest ordering a kit 6637 from clay at riff raff diesel.
The best chip, tunes, programmer for a 7.3l is by far a php hydra chip with tunes from a reputable tuner. Matt at gearhead, Tony Wildman, bill/Jay at php are all good ones among others. These guys write tunes specially for your particular truck and the mods you have done to it. With the php hydra they can email them to you and you can plug in a laptop to the chip via USB and load them right up. With the hydra chip you can also change tunes on the fly by pushing a single button. It truly is the best option available regardless of what other hooligans will tell you. Other brands and trucks are different of course, but for a 7.3l this is your absolute best option.
Is your truck an auto or six speed?

All depends on what you want out of it. I would start with a diamond eye 4" turbo back exhaust system, RiffRaff 6637 air intake kit, and a chip. TS and PHP are the best chips for the 7.3. PHP can hold a lot more tunes, but if you're looking for gauges too, the TS Informant6 Combo is a great choice as you get a 6 position chip w/assorted performance tunes and a high idle tune, a modified Edge Insight CTS monitor that you can use for gauges for virtually anything you want to monitor on the truck, control your chip through the monitor, ability to pull codes with it, as well as data logging, maintenance alarms ect. Next would be a compressor wheel for your turbo, either a billet wicked wheel2 or a riffraff aluminum wheel. You can look at my build thread for my 95' PowerStroke for more info. Let me know if you have any questions, I'm always here.

Hey thanks for the tips and suggestions! I will definetly be doing more research and looking into what you suggested! I am sure that I will have more questions once I get down to the nitty gritty. I have never done anything to my vehicles in the past, but have wrenched on them for basic maintenance and done a lot on sleds so I figured it is time to move up in scale!
Hubbard, unfortunately it is the auto. Would have loved the 6, but wasn't going to be that picky in buying. The next truck I buy will be exactly what I want or I will change it to be so...but that is hopefully years down the line!
Mike, thanks very much! I will be sure to follow your build thread and let you know if I have any other questions.

I asked about the transmission because you can probably count on needing to have your auto transmission "built" (rebuilt by a specialist with billet/stronger internal parts that will last the trucks life with heavy abuse) A 6 speed is pretty much bullet proof once a better clutch is put in.

Nice to know! I figured I would have to look into it at some point. I hope that is a year or more down the line, but when you buy used it can be a coin flip with some things.
