Diesel 101 (in AK): What should a first timer know?

I am avidly shopping for my first diesel. I have been following the Facebook group for several months now (have yet to make it to a local meet). Though I have done a lot of research and read what I can, I figured there may be some things that are specific to Alaska that would be good to know.
